We were commissioned by the textile artist Vidhya Lockyer
to update and improve her website. The original site looked
good but was created in Flash which has a number of disadvantages,
primarily poor search engine visibility. When we took on the
project the site was unknown to any of the major search engines.
The
client accepted our redesign recommendations. We recreated
the site in HTML, which is easier for search engines to read
and therefore index ready to be available for searches. The
look of the site is very similar to the original version -
it includes samples of her work and background explanation
about the techniques used.
Our service included submitting the site to the major search
engines, including Google, AltaVista and The Open Directory
Project.
The site was launched on 8 September 2003.
We obtained a listing on dmoz.org, The Open Directory Project,
by 23 October. The Open Directory Project is important because
it is a human-edited directory shared out to many other search
engines. The site was also available on AltaVista by this
date.
By 31 October the site was available from Google too, as
the screen shot demonstrates - top result for search term
"textile artist berkshire."

The site also appears as result 22 for search term "textile
artist england" in Google.
A good example of the speed we can get sites listed in the
important search engines and directories.
See also our search
engine considerations page. Search engine results detailed
above were investigated on 22 November 2003.
