Navigation is a very important aspect of good web design.
If a site isn't easy to move around, visitors may get frustrated
and give up and go elsewhere.
One important consideration when designing a navigation system
(which usually forms the framework of the site) is the site's
target audience.
| Is the target audience... |

...likely to be experienced or inexperienced
when it comes to surfing the web? |
 |
...looking for information quickly to move
on somewhere else, or are they likely to be relaxed and
willing to browse around? |

When we designed a site for a London nanny agency,
we laid out the navigation in a simple way on the left
hand side.
The site always gives a clear idea of where you are
within the site structure.

A simple navigation system is important here because the site's target audience
- nannies and parents looking for nannies - are unlikely to be technically advanced.
The site has proved a hit and has hence been extended a couple of times - another
advantage of a well thought out navigation system is that it is easy to extend
later on.
